I labirinti nelle chiese
"Nei
culti solari precristiani il sorgere del sole simboleggiava la vita, il
suo tramontare la morte.
Per i cristiani, ugualmente, la Gerusalemme celeste è
a oriente, mentre a occidente, agli antipodi della città santa,
vi sono solo tenebre.
Le grandi cattedrali, proiezione dell'universo e splendide mediatrici
tra l'uomo e il divino, nulla hanno di casuale. Il loro asse centrale
congiunge l'ovest all'est e rappresenta l'eternità.
In esse il portale d'ingresso è sempre a ovest e ciò permette
all'uomo che vi entra di dirigersi verso est, di risalire dalla morte
alla vita, dal mondo profano verso il sacro, là ove è l'origine
della vera luce, ove è il Santissimo Sacramento.
Il labirinto, che simboleggiava la porta spirituale per accedere all'eternità,
aveva anch'esso l'ingresso - uno solo - posto a ovest."
